The natural beauty of Mount Pelion

The extraordinary peninsula of Mount Pelion is located in Central Greece, overlooking the city of Volos on its west side and the Aegean Sea on its east. It comprises gorgeous forests and pebbly beaches. Mount Pelion offers a variety of activities such as hiking, skiing and sailing and it is a wonderful destination during all seasons of the year.

You may enjoy its traditional architecture, reflected in the grand mansions and the picturesque houses in all villages spreading all over the mountain.

The peninsula of Pelion hides zillions of treasures, wating for you to be discovered. Therefore, this list is by no means exhaustive and updated regularly.

NORTHWEST

StagiatesThe village is famous for its spring water and in the month of July takes place the "Sausage Festival" with traditional music and dance! It is 11km from Volos at an altitude of 340m.

PortariaIt is a picturesque village and was built around the monastery of "Panagia of Portaria", constructed in the 13th century. Portaria is situated 13km from Volos at an altitude of 650m and it is covered by forests, cobble-stoned paths and spring waters.

Centaurs' pathIn Greek Mythology the Centaurs were creatures with the upper body of a man and the legs of a horse. They lived in the woods and in large caves. The trail starts near Portaria, through a large stone arch with flowing water and heads northeast, on a cobbled path in a ravine.

MakrinitsaThe village known as “the balcony of Pelion” is built on the slope of the mountain and its characteristic style has been preserved through the years. In the main square, the plain trees are very old and provide shade during summer. Visit the church of Agios Yiannis with frescos painted by the artist Theofilos, Agios Athanasios, Agios Nikolaos, the "Tapali" mansion, the Museum for Art Folklore and the Museum of byzantine art, without missing the famous old spring fountain with its sculptured lion heads. People used to believe that its water made you immortal. It is situated 16km from Volos at an altitude of 700m.

Trail Stagiates-KoukouravaA fantastic trail near Stagiates with relatively easy route. It takes an average of 2h to complete.

Episkopi hillOn top of Episkopi hill, an extraordinary and mystical setting with a delightful view of the city of Volos and the Pegasitic gulf, stands the church of the Dormition of the Virgin. It is an historic and significant religious Byzantine monument, rebuilt in 1639.

ChaniaAt an altitude of 1200m this magnificent forest of pine and beech trees changes constantly. Chania is 26km from Volos and 13km from Portaria and is the passage from the east to the west of Pelion. In the old days merchants used to stop in the hamlet of Chania, which means hostels, for the night.

Goritsa hillThis natural hill is about 200m above sea level, with the gorgeous church of Zoodochos Pigi at the top. In the 4th century BC, Philip II built on the hill a city with a wall of 2,850m length and around 3,500 inhabitants. Visit the remains of the ancient temple, the church and enjoy the panorama!

CENTRALWEST

Agios LavrentiosIt is a charming village full of longstanding mansions and old cobbled paths for unforgettable walks. For spectacular scenery follow the paths which lead to Drakia and Hania. Close to the village is the Byzantine monastery of Agios Lavrentios, dated from 1378. During the third weekend of June takes place the festival of cherries with traditional food, dances and songs. Agios Lavrentios is 20km from Volos and at an altitude of 600m.

Trail Ano Lechonia-MiliesOn foot or by train, the so called “Moutzouris”, this fantastic trail with lush vegetation and fantastic views in mount Pelion will remain in your hearts forever. Do not miss to visit the rail station, where the little train reaches its destination. Evaristo De Chirico, father to the well know painter Giorgio De Chirico was the engineer who developed this project in 1895. The original length of the rails was 29km from Volos. Today however, only 16km is still in use.

NORTHEAST

Trail Tsagarada-DamouhariThis is a fantastic 3km trail in Tsagarada. A moderately challenging path, with steep climb and astonishing views. It takes an average of 60 min to complete and it is open all year-round.

Fakistra beachIn just few kilometres away from the village of Tsagarada, discover one of the treasures of Pelion. Fakistra beach with its pristine beauty and unspoiled landscape will amaze and offer you un unforgettable moment in its emerald waters.

Mylopotamos beachIn just few kilometres away from the village of Tsagarada, discover this beautiful golden sandy beach with white pebbles and turquoise waters. It is not an organised beach, but there is a bar nearby as well as changing rooms.

SOUTH

Agia KyriakiIt is definitely one of the most idyllic fishing villages that maintains its tranditional colour. Agia Kyriaki is known for various services for boat maintenance. On the 6th-7th of July, enjoy the village’s celebrations with folk costumes, dance and songs. At the small tavernas near the port try the delicious fresh fish and octopus, daily caught by the local fishermen.

LefokastroThis is a pretty fishing village on the Pagasitic gulf, 34km from Volos. Select one of the marvellous beaches with crystal clean waters and enjoy the unspoiled scenery. It is five-minutes drive from the touristic village of Afissos.

NORTHEAST

KissosIn this highly picturesque village, you may visit the well-known church of Agia Marina. Admire the carved wooden icons painted by the celebrated Greek painter Ioannis Pagonis. Chapels, spring water fountains and scenery will certainly delight you with their beauty. Kissos is a mountainous village 63km from Volos and at an altitude of 520m.
